![]() ![]() ![]() I was a loser, and I couldn’t resist him for crap. Or maybe it was because, recently, he seemed hell-bent on us “being friends” again. Maybe that was why his nonverbal rejection hurt so much. I’d even discovered we had kink in common! On paper, I was seemingly perfect for him. It’d been the two of us against the world since I was a kid. I used to be his Abel, his sweetheart, his trouble. My anxiety was all over the place, my fits of rage had just earned me a suspension from the team, I questioned myself at every turn, and being home for two weeks was gonna make it impossible to avoid Madigan. I admitted my feelings for Madigan Monroe over a year ago, and I was still waiting for a response. Correction: it sucked when you were in love with your parents’ closest friend and he didn’t feel the same. In the bedroom, my attitude was my last defense, a front I wanted to see tumbling down. On the ice, it turned me into a hotheaded hockey player. For as much as I depended on order and a structured life to easier manage my bipolar disorder, fire was irresistible and indisputably my favorite toy to play with. ![]() ![]() ![]() He has included them and a score of others in ''Tales From Ovid,'' translating freely and intelligently into idiomatic free verse, in stanzas of varying length. ![]() Three years ago, 40 or so leading poets writing in English turned their hands to passages from Ovid in an impressive collective effort, ''After Ovid: New Metamorphoses.'' Hughes, whose idiom and sensibility owe much to the harsh landscape of his northern English upbringing, is neither. In the sophisticated voice of late Augustan Rome, is both urban and urbane. Where Ovid is often ironic, his tone elusive, Hughes is serious to the point of earnestness. Vid and Ted Hughes do not seem, at first, a likely pairing. The whole time before he's pinning for Frankie and the whole time after he's jealous of any man that looks her way and professes his undying love and declares that he'll fight for her. One thing that soured my enjoyment was this (I'll spoiler tag even though it is something that's revealed in the first chapter just in case you want to go in completely blind) While separated from Frankie, Deacon sleeps with two models while on a drunken bender and doesn't remember anything when he wakes up. ![]() In Love Burns, the tables turn and I found myself struggling with some of Deacon's decisions while I loved seeing Frankie come into her own and find her inner strength and voice. There is plenty of historical background to build the picture of this kingdom, its myths and legends. Set in a mystical world of magic, dragons, special powers and powerful god-like stars, who benevolently (mostly) rule over the lands, it is easy to become immersed into the imagined world. I have a feeling that there will be many of young readers waking up a bit bleary eyed, having read well into the night! There is plenty of lovely description and intrigue to keep the pages turning. Pace is so important to keep all readers engaged, and this one races along, the reader quickly getting drawn in to the adventures of the two main protagonists. The book is ideal for readers aged 8 or 9 and above. This genre may not be my usual reading, but I really enjoyed escaping into this new world, engaging with the young heroine and hero. ![]() |
